Task and goal

At the beginning of the 21st century more than 6 billion human beings are facing a serious water crisis. On the World Water Day 2005, the United Nations submitted a revised report about the future of our No. 1 food – the drinking water. This report reflects the importance of wastewater and the strain on our earth by waste and harmful substances which again causes a strain on the ground water.

According to the United Nations report 1.2 billion people do not have access to clean water. With tremendous endeavour the United Nations want to reduce this figure by 50 percent within 5 years. However, experts believe that due to an increasing population within the next 25 years more than 5.0 billion people will be living on earth not having access to clean water.

80 percent of illnesses arising from infections could be avoided if the wastewater of our world would not just seep away without being treated. The alarming statement is that 1 litre of untreated wastewater contaminates 8 litres of drinking water. Purification of wastewater, securing landfills, protection of ground water and treatment of contaminated soils are pressing future tasks in order to secure clean water for future generations.
